Economic deprivation: the root cause of Birmingham riot.

Excellent indepth analysis in this Guardian article of the real reasons behind the recent Birmingham Riot.

It turns out the malicious rape rumour was probably started by a rival haircare business to the one at the centre of the accusation. It is this cut-throat competition for a livelyhood in an area with limited opportunities and 22% unemployment, that fed the mistrust between communities not their cultural difference.

Why else do these riots never occur in prosperous areas?

  1. Good question about riots. It seems like the guys and gals who stir up riots have tried in prosperous areas and found little enthusiasm for destructiveness. Incidently, over on The Christian Prophet blog today Jesus takes Christian socialists seriously to task.
