REGENCY LABOUR NEWS JULY 2005

By email from Peter Freeman

Following our election victories across the city on 5 May Labour Party membership is growing again in all areas. In Regency we welcome four new members and two others who have rejoined. Can we each recruit another new member by the end of the year? Forms are available from Anne Freeman and on www.labour.org.uk.

At our ward meeting on 13 June Graham Towers and Liz Stewart put forward a resolution calling for reforms to the voting system. After a lively debate we passed it by a majority vote. The constituency General Committee also endorsed it on 4 July by the Chair’s casting vote and we have sent it to David Lepper MP and the national party.

Neil Harding has set up a website called brightonregencylabourparty.blogspot. com to allow members to communicate more easily. Neil has also volunteered to produce a ward newsletter over the summer.

Cllr Roy Pennington has taken the lead in setting up a Neighbourhood Action Group covering most of Regency and Brunswick wards. It has a modest budget provided by the Council and has already agreed to finance a lift for disabled access to St Michael’s Church hall. The Council has also recognised the new Clifton Montpelier and Powis Community Alliance that is currently being launched to represent the community of the Clifton Hill Conservation Area.

There will be no branch meeting in August. The Labour Party annual conference will be held at the Brighton Centre again this year starting on Sunday 25 September. Although the official deadline for applications has passed members can still almost certainly get passes by applying on-line at www.labour.org.uk. Some free passes are also available from Rosemary Collins (621627) for members who can help at the Brighton Labour Party stall.
